Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, sorted

Sole traders and landlords over the income limit must keep digital records and send HMRC an update every quarter, then a final return at the end of the year.

Who it applies to, and when

MTD for Income Tax is being phased in by income level:

FromSelf-employment and property income over
April 2026£50,000
April 2027£30,000
April 2028£20,000

The limit is based on your turnover and rental income before expenses, not your profit, so many people are caught sooner than they expect.

MTD is new for everyone, so we’ll sit down with you in person and show you exactly how it works.

Common questions

Does MTD for Income Tax apply to me?

It applies to sole traders and landlords whose combined self-employment and property income is over the threshold for that year: £50,000 from April 2026, £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. The test uses gross income, not profit.

What do I have to send HMRC?

A summary update every quarter from compatible software, then a final return after the tax year ends.

Can you do the quarterly updates for me?

Yes. We can keep your digital records and submit every update, or set you up to do it yourself with our support.
