McCreath AccountancyWorking with you to grow your business

Accountants for builders, trades and CIS

Joiners, electricians, plumbers, roofers and building firms across Renfrewshire, Glasgow and the islands use us for their CIS, VAT and tax returns. We make sure subcontractors get their refunds and contractors stay on the right side of HMRC.

Subcontractors

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors take 20% off your pay if you’re registered, or 30% if you’re not. That money is tax paid in advance, and most subcontractors are owed some of it back. We prepare your tax return, match it to your CIS statements and get your refund through as quickly as possible. If you trade through a limited company, we offset the CIS taken off against the company’s PAYE bill instead.

Contractors

If you pay subcontractors, you need to check each one with HMRC before paying them, take off the right amount and send a CIS return every month by the 19th. Since April 2026 HMRC expects a return every month even if you paid no subcontractors, unless you’ve told them you’re inactive, and the penalties for getting it wrong have got tougher. We can run your monthly CIS returns alongside your payroll.

Gross payment status and VAT

Gross payment status means no deductions at all, which is a big help to cash flow. You have to keep your tax and VAT up to date to get it and keep it. We’ll also make sure you’re applying the construction reverse charge for VAT correctly.

Common questions

How much CIS tax will I get back?

It depends on your profit and expenses. Many subcontractors get a refund because 20% was taken off their full pay before costs. We’ll work it out once your figures are in.

When are CIS returns due?

Contractors send a CIS return every month, by the 19th of the following month.

Can I get paid without CIS deductions?

Yes, if HMRC grants you gross payment status. You need to meet turnover tests and keep your tax and VAT up to date. We can apply for you.
